Does GTA 6 Have Online at Launch? The Short Answer: No

GTA 6: online at launch? The short answer.

Grand Theft Auto 6 will launch on November 19 without an online mode. Rockstar is selling it as “a single-player experience,” and there is still no word on when multiplayer will arrive.

What Rockstar has said

The wording comes straight from Take-Two’s press release, which says the game “features a single-player experience.” The PlayStation Store FAQ goes further: asked about multiplayer, it answers that GTA 6 “is a single-player experience.”

Rockstar has not announced a GTA Online sequel, co-op, or any multiplayer plans. Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier has reported that Take-Two isn’t planning to discuss the online side anytime soon.

A 2027 window, from Twitch

The only timeline so far comes from outside Rockstar. In an interview with Bloomberg, Twitch CEO Dan Clancy said he expects GTA 6 multiplayer in 2027.

Rockstar has not confirmed that date, and Video Games Chronicle noted it isn’t clear whether Clancy was confirming a plan or making an educated guess.

Precedent points to online arriving eventually. GTA Online launched two weeks after GTA 5 in 2013, and Red Dead Online followed Red Dead Redemption 2 by about a month in 2018. Kotaku has also reported that court documents mention 32-player lobbies.

How long online took last time

Days from the game’s launch to its online mode

GTA 5 → GTA Online 14 days
RDR2 → Red Dead Online 32 days
GTA 6 → online ?
GTA Online: Sep 17 → Oct 1, 2013. Red Dead Online beta: Oct 26 → Nov 27, 2018. GTA 6: no date. Twitch’s CEO expects 2027.

GTA Online isn’t going anywhere

The current GTA Online will keep running. Take-Two, Rockstar’s parent company, addressed it at its shareholder meeting:

How fans are taking it

Reaction is split. Some players are glad Rockstar is putting the story first. Others are worried about what comes next: according to TechRadar, many fans now believe GTA 6’s online mode could end up as a separate, paid service.

The $100 Ultimate Edition hasn’t helped. Some single-player shops and side missions are locked to it, and one fan quoted by GamesRadar put the blame on GTA Online: “It was a huge mistake to support GTAO. It has spilled out onto single player too now.”

My take

Honestly I’m fine with it. I want to play the story first anyway.

The part I care about is RP. GTA RP runs on modded servers for GTA 5 on PC, and GTA 6 doesn’t even have a PC version announced yet. So RP on GTA 6 is probably a long way off. Until then I’ll keep watching GTA 5 RP on Twitch like always.
