What Is GTA RP? A Beginner’s Guide to GTA Roleplay
Ever opened Twitch and found a streamer in GTA arguing with a cop for an hour, without firing a shot? That’s GTA RP. And it just got Rockstar’s official blessing.
What GTA RP actually is
GTA RP is roleplay inside Grand Theft Auto V. Players join custom servers and play a character, not a game. You can be a cop, a mechanic, a lawyer, a taxi driver or a bank robber, and you stay in character the whole time. There’s no script. The stories come from hundreds of people improvising in the same city.

How GTA RP works: FiveM and NoPixel
Most RP servers run on FiveM, a free multiplayer mod for the PC version of GTA V, according to Elgato’s beginner guide. Each server adds its own jobs, maps and rules. The most famous is NoPixel, the server behind a lot of the GTA clips you’ve probably seen on Twitch.
Rockstar used to fight this scene. In 2015 it banned FiveM’s makers from its Social Club, Club386 noted. Then in August 2023, Rockstar bought Cfx.re, the team behind FiveM, GameSpot and VGC reported.
Rockstar just made it official
“We’re excited to support the nopixel team as they create the future of GTA RP.”
That project is NoPixel V. Its closed beta opened on September 8 through the Rockstar Games Launcher, with about 450 invited creators and veteran roleplayers in the first wave, Dexerto and Game Rant reported. NoPixel’s lead developer Koil said more invite phases are coming.

How to start with GTA RP
The easiest way in is to watch. Search “GTA RP” on Twitch and pick a streamer. To play, you need GTA V on PC, the free FiveM client and a decent mic. Then pick a server: many have queues or a whitelist application, so beginner-friendly public servers are the place to start.
What about GTA 6?
Unconfirmed. GTA 6 launches November 19 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S as a single-player game, and Rockstar hasn’t announced a PC version. FiveM is PC only, so GTA 6 RP is still a question mark. Read more on whether GTA 6 has online at launch.
My take
I don’t play it, I just watch it on Twitch, and it’s honestly some of the best stuff on there. Half the fun is the random moments nobody planned.
If you’re new, pick one streamer and watch a full night. You’ll get it fast.
